P.S. I LOVE U.S.A.

P.S. I LOVE U.S.A. is a series of street photographs with collage printed at postcard size. These souvenir-like objects act as a memory of a trip, place or situation, but the collage creates questions about the authenticity of these moments. The photographs were taken at different times and places while traveling throughout the country. The collage, sometimes text, a sign or an object, allows me to redirect the meaning of the photograph to my main fears as an immigrant: racism and gun violence. During my time at RIT, I was encouraged to approach my practice in a new way. To learn what I’ve done before, I started by going back to my archive. After a few days of browsing through it, I couldn’t resist making comparisons between those days in which I naively did road trips from Massachusetts to Texas, to now, when I will think twice before crossing many red states. This body of work took too many years in the making, from the first photograph in 2012 until the incorporation of collage in 2018, but I think it was meant to be this way. This series talk about how my experience as an immigrant in the United States has changed over the years, before 2016 I felt welcomed, after that, not so much.
